Solitude or Coworkers – Which is better?

Do you work all by yourself or do you have co workers? Which do you prefer?

I am actually mixed on this question. At times in my life I have worked in solitude and gone crazy mad, and at the same time accomplished amazing amounts of work. Other times, having people to share the day with allows you to bounce ideas around. However it can be a distraction if you are not careful.

  1. I’ve come to the conclusion that having coworkers is more productive overall, even with the inevitable distractions. When you work by your self, unless you’re in a zone, it can be hard to stay focused on an ongoing basis. With coworkers, even with distractions, I find it’s easier to stay productive day to day.

  2. For 5 years, I worked remotely from home and communicated 95% with my team over IM. For the past year I’ve been working on-site with a team, and I’m definitely missing the solitude of working at home.

I find that I’m way more productive when I’m in control of my surroundings and interactions with other people.

  3. It really depends for me. I usually work well if I have the competition/shame of having another person around. Working so i dont look bad. Peer pressure and precrastination are two great motivation

  4. I just came across a great post elsewhere about the ideal work environment… covers Aerons, company vs solitude, and even working in an Airstream trailer!

(I’ve actually been thinking about living and or/working in an Airstream myself – the interiors on the new International models are beautiful)

  5. Before I did an airstream, I would look at an appartment or sharing office space with people. It would be much nicer to have a real bathroom and sink, even kitchen area. That’s just me though.
