New Trend in Blog Comment Spam

I’ve noticed a new trend in blog comment spam this weekend. Robots are posting seemingly innocuous (the word of the day) comments that link to a domain name. But when you click on the domain name it displays a newspaper web site. Because it doesn’t look like spam, the blog’s author approves it, and goes on his way. My guess is that after a few weeks, the spammer changes the resulting url to include whatever promotion they have in mind.

  1. I’ve noticed a new series of spam comments on my wife’s blog as well – it looks like the spammers are parsing existing comments for whatever is in the “name’ field of approved comments, then using those as names on spam comments. If you’re not reading the body of the spam then many folks might approve them on the basis of the name alone.
