Viddler has launched! Go check it out now and set up a profile. It’s a new video sharing web site with a lot of cool features. We played a part in making it happen, along with a great team spread around the world.
Andrew Smith is the lead designer on the project. I handled site planning and blueprinting. Robert Sandie and Donna DeMarco are the founders of Viddler, and organized the project (Pennsylvania), and Kasper Cecek and Lukasz Hankus did all of the Java and Flash development (Poland).
Major kudos to Andrew for his work on this project. From the design of the logo to the overall site design and front end CSS and markup, as well as a large portion of the ideas behind this project, Andrew really made it happen.
Highlights:
- Upload lots of videos at once, and videos up to 500 MB in size
- Tag your videos with timed tags, and link to that moment
- Comment on a specific portion of the video
- Share videos with everyone, or only with specific friends you select, or keep video private
The time tags is the coolest feature. You can hover over the little dots in the video timeline to see what people have said about your video. You can also share a video and send people a link to a specific moment in the video.
A few more screenshots:
The Dashboard which is your homepage once you have logged in successfully.
Your Videos panel lets you see how many times your videos have been viewed, and see whether they are public, private, or shared.
The Explore panel is visible to logged in and logged out visitors.
There you have it! It’s a great new video sharing site, with unique time tags. Be sure to add us as your friends. Our usernames are Chris, Thomas, Kent, and Andrew.
And here’s a test embed of a video:

Congratulations Viddler crew!!
[…] Chris Tingom of Tornado Design has announced that Viddler, a new social video web site has launched. Chris gave a demo of Viddler at Phoenix BarCamp over the weekend and it looks really interesting. The ability to add tags and comments to particular points in a video is pretty cool as is the ability to send a link to a particular spot in the video. There’s been a lot of activity in this space lately, but Viddler looks like it might have enough interesting features to get it on the map. […]
Very clean looking. I like the taggable timeline and 500MB size limit. I think the fact that you can use it to record from your web cam will foster a healthy vlogging community, especially since YouTube is so full of hateful comments these days.
Chris, Congrats to you and the crew. I love this product. Any plans for an API? I’ve heard a few great ideas for mashups with this type of technology.
[…] Viddler.com launched recently, and I love this taggable video sharing. It’s one of the most glaring deficiencies of YouTube in my opinion. Anyway I just thought you might what to check it out. And Chris Tingom at BrainFeul.tv has a great write up on it, so I won’t even try to do better . bookmark me digg me […]
Well first off the man of steel sequence is a copyright issue and some others. Didn’t youtube just get into trouble for the same reason.
Personally do we really need a new myspace, youtube or well you get the point. The internet is already chock full of these video publishing sites. (Sorry I am negative but hey you got paid right?)
Nice site though clean and simple and not any advertising(yet).
Chris! You and Andrew knocked this frontend out of the park. Love it. I especially like the attention to such details as suggesting other features and areas of the site once the primary task or information has been found.
Really nice job guys.
WAY to go, Chris, WAAAAY to go! Very nice, bro.
Congratulations to you and the team.
Thanks everybody.
Are the videos searchable by tag? Coull.tv seems like a strong player here. Blinkx as well.
Yes, videos are searchable by tag
Actually, I think those superman cartoons are so old, they’re out of copyright. But I could be wrong.
[…] In addition, I thought I’d take the opportunity to send the Viddler crew some love and show off what their new video sharing and tagging site can do. If you’re new to Viddler, you can click on the time tags and comments (shown as dots in the time line) to access the different tips directly, or you can just watch the video in its entirety. Anyway, here it is! […]
