Font Squirrel

If you haven’t been paying attention, you may have missed learning about Font Squirrel. Here at Tornado we’re big fans of the site. It is quickly becoming one of the best sources of high quality fonts on the web — and free ones, too.

They recently released @Font-Face Kits, which is a tool that allows you to easily use any of the fonts on Font Squirrel in your web sites. It’s a great tool for using custom fonts but preserving search optimization.

Alex from HypeForType emailed to let me know about their new typeface collection. It’s called Exclusive Faces Volume 2. It’s a nice collection of edgy and cool fonts.

One thing you don’t want to miss is their blog. It has some cool typography design effects and experiments.

Annual Report: For a Person

Here’s a sweet idea! Make an annual report for yourself! Too bad it would probably take 20 hours just to produce a report this spiffy. Nicholas Feltron was recently shown holding his annual report in the Wall Street Journal.

I’d wager that Mr. Feltron is the sort of person that wouldn’t spell his own name wrong, but for some reason the Wall Street Journal did. At least he got it right in his report, which is beautiful. I’d also guess that Feltron is the sort of guy that tracks his time — wise. Anyways, I thought it was cool and wanted to share.

New Walmart Logo

What do you think? I like how they’re making it a single word (without the dash in the middle) but dislike the color change and the unclear sun symbol which doesn’t have a story behind it. I suppose the start didn’t either, but it’s so familiar. Read more about the change on Brand New.

Presidential Campaign Logos

It’s fascinating to watch these candidates position themselves. Both in the media and with their web sites. It’s also fun to watch them craft a visual image. Some have really good teams behind their identities, and others only so-so.

I’ll point out that Gilmore and Hunter have failed the apostrophe test. It only works one way, guys.

Here are my votes for strongest logo: Hillary (because of the bold typeface, and clean and unique flag) and John McCain (for bringing in the military theme). I like Rudy’s logo, but wonder if it should say something else?

My friend Gary sent me a really neat link today. One of the people involved with Wesley Clark’s campaign posted a few of the concepts they came up with and the story behind the logo. Great reading.

I ran across the Portland State University site and saw they had also just re-designed their logo. It’s brilliant in its design. Notice how the icon is also the initials of the university. Very nicely done.

I couldn’t help notice the similarity between these logos. The “M” is so close, it’s either on purpose, or a branding nightmare waiting to happen. See for yourself. Medstory.com and Medtronic.com.

I’m voting for the Clover logo for Logo of the Month for October, barely making it in time to even be called the logo of October. Nevertheless, it is. I really like how they have coffee bean plant leaves on the logo, and used the L to make the shape. Genius.
