This is the best time of year

Posted by Chris Tingom on November 23, 2005 at 2:11 pm.

Wow, Thanksgiving is just my favorite time of the year. It starts off a string of parties, nice cool weather in Phoenix, and everybody’s just a little bit more relaxed. Plus I can show up to work in a sweater and jeans and leave the windows wide open in my car. It just can’t be beat.

The Intel Life: Long Days and Long Weekends

Posted by Chris Tingom on at 5:30 am.

I know a few people who work at Intel in Phoenix and one of them is considering a move to a new part of the company. He described how they are maximizing productivity and I thought it was interesting.

  • 12-Hour workdays (6 am to 6 pm)
  • Rotating number of workdays per week: 4 and 3 days
  • Allows Intel to keep a day and night crew
  • Basically you get a 3 or 4 day weekend every single week

I wanted to find out what you thought of this set up and whether you’d do it? Does it benefit the employer or the employee more?

In which I lose twelve ping pong games in a row

Posted by Chris Tingom on November 22, 2005 at 9:00 am.

In most social situations that revolve around my ping pong table I am the clear champion. It’s not that I’m an egotistical table tennis snob, it’s just that I’m the best when it comes time to a match with my friends.

Until recently that is. In the last week I have met seven new champions all better than me. It’s a conspiracy, I tell you! I’ve never lost so many games. Especially so many in a row. I’ve lost a good dozen games in a row by now. Would someone please step forward willing to be defeated?

Ok, I think I’ve caught my breath by now.

I actually saw a car with the license plate 10SNE1. It’s the veritable genius when it comes to license plates which we all learned as kids and up until recently I had never seen.

Is it officially table tennis or ping pong? Maybe reading a little bit of how they filmed the Forest Gump ping pong scene will help you decide. In that scene, Forest represents the U.S. in a championship game against China. Forest of course wins having two paddles and amazing concentration skills.

Lacoste

Posted by Chris Tingom on at 5:00 am.

I found the Lacoste site rather different. It is painfully overdone with simple animations and blends and if you removed them would make the site so much better. Problems: Hard to navigate, big buttons that have graphics but mean nothing, and not enough product is shown.

So are you making $10,000 an hour yet?

Posted by Chris Tingom on November 21, 2005 at 9:00 am.

Steve Pavlina has a good article up on his site about making $10,000 an hour. The concept isn’t to make $10,000 every hour, but to be aware of the ideas around you that might earn $10,000 over the course of the next year. He talks about how you have to think beyond the normal “I charge $50/hour” and start looking around you and identifying possibilities to earn $5,000, $10,000 or more with one simple idea.

To go a little bit beyond the idea of making $10,000 from one idea: I think it’s a good goal to create as many sources of residual income as you can. It’s easy to be so focused on the job at hand that you forget to create meaningful sources of residual revenue. Sometimes one simple idea is all it takes.

There are some other interesting posts up at Steve’s web site. He is currently experimenting with polyphasic sleep – which means he takes naps throughout the day and never actually sleeps overnight. He’s been at it almost a month now and has no plans to stop.

Giggle

Posted by Chris Tingom on at 3:00 am.

Giggle is the sort of site I look at and say “nice colors but too much for me.” However, I still decided to post it here because I felt the execution was very well done. Someone sent it to me and wanted me to look at it because of a proposal for a similar site. Honestly, it’s a little bit too-clean, you know? I’d like to see the small business, personality aspect shine through a little bit more. Where’s the life in this site? Anyways, there you go.

I found a fly in my soup last week and I remembered this funny poem

Posted by Chris Tingom on November 19, 2005 at 9:25 pm.

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.
I dunno why she swallowed that fly,
Perhaps she’ll die.

Caption Contest Fridays #47

Posted by Chris Tingom on November 18, 2005 at 12:38 pm.

It’s FRIDAY! Here’s the photo for today (a bit late in the day unfortunately). Have a great weekend everyone!

Remember, if you go to the gym every day this next week you can eat a second helping on Thanksgiving. I’m looking for the perfect butterball / shopping / turkey themed photo for next Friday. Their are several contenders, and I’m looking for more.
